Choosing Love Purposefully
In my quest for longevity and fulfillment, I've come to realize that the cornerstone of such a life lies in the profound embrace of love. Reflecting on my journey, I can't pinpoint the exact moment when this revelation dawned upon me, but I vividly recall witnessing my mother's valiant struggle with love—a journey marked by single-handedly raising me, shouldering the burden of caring for her family, all while neglecting her own needs and battling with the shadows of depression.
Observing my mother's graceful aging process wasn't devoid of its challenges, particularly as we navigated the complexities of our relationship during my formative years. Through these shared experiences, I've developed an intimate understanding of her struggles and triumphs. I'm a firm advocate for extending this empathy and understanding to all, recognizing it as a catalyst for liberating oneself from the shackles of personal trauma.
I've come to understand that the vitality and richness of life stem from our capacity to love—to love what we do, to cherish our children, and to bask in the warmth of reciprocal affection. For me, the absence of this vital force would be akin to an early demise. It's a realization that has prompted me to encourage others, particularly Black women, to reframe their narratives and center love as the guiding force in their lives.
Despite the historical tendency for Black women to selflessly assume the role of the nurturer and caregiver for society, I've embraced the imperative revolutionary act to reclaim our rightful place as the architects of our own narratives. It's a journey of self-empowerment and self-love—a journey that I'm honored to undertake alongside countless other women who, like me, are striving to prioritize love in all its forms.
As I continue to navigate this path, I'm reminded of the profound wisdom that resides within each of us—a wisdom that beckons us to honor our stories, prioritize our well-being, and unapologetically embrace the transformative power of love.
