Falling in Love with Myself
As a Black woman, the complexities of our experiences are both profound and deeply nuanced. We are often the pillars of our families and communities, socialized and indoctrinated to be caregivers, nurturers, and the steadfast shoulders upon which others lean. We are mothers, sisters, friends—but amidst all these roles, it's crucial to remember that we are women first.
In this season of my life, I am embracing an intimate love affair with myself. This journey of self-love and self-discovery is one I am navigating with intention and purpose, leaning into my feminine energy and redefining what it means to be truly in love.
For too long, I have poured my heart into my children, my job, and my relationships, often leaving little for myself. The exhaustion that comes with being everything for everyone else can be overwhelming. It’s a fatigue that many Black women know all too well—a weariness that comes not only from physical exertion but from the emotional and mental labor we carry every day.
But now, I am learning to fall in love with myself first. This means giving myself what I need, nurturing my own spirit, and prioritizing my own joy. It's about understanding that self-love isn't selfish—it's essential. Only by filling my own cup can I truly be there for others.
Leaning into my feminine energy has been transformative. It has allowed me to connect with my inner strength and grace, to celebrate my womanhood in all its facets. This energy is powerful and healing, and it is teaching me to embrace vulnerability as a strength rather than a weakness.
Redefining what it means to be in love has also been a key part of this journey. Love is not just about romance or partnership; it's about a deep, abiding respect and affection for oneself. It’s about working smart, not just hard, and building a life that fulfills and sustains me, even after my children have grown and gone.
While marriage and partnership remain some of my favorite things, they are no longer the sole measures of my worth or happiness. I am absolutely in love with who I am becoming. This self-love affair has given me the freedom to explore my passions, to set boundaries, and to cultivate a life that is rich and full in its own right.
So here I am, falling in love with myself anew each day. This is my season of growth, healing, and profound self-discovery. I invite you all, especially my fellow Black women, to embark on your own journeys of self-love. To prioritize your needs, to celebrate your individuality, and to cherish the women you are becoming.
In loving ourselves first, we create a foundation of strength and joy that benefits not only us but everyone we care about. This is our time to shine, to be unapologetically ourselves, and to live our lives with the fullness and richness we deserve.
Here’s to the journey of falling in love with ourselves, because we are worth it.
